Harry Potter and the Hogwart's VBS

After five record-breaking books and three successful movies, Harry Potter has secured his seat among the most beloved heroes of youth pop culture. But with the recent release of author J.K. Rowling's sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, some in the church are still unsure what to make of the winsome wizard. Many church leaders, including Pope Benedict, have condemned Harry Potter, but at least one church, in a controversial move, embraced him. Their example raises a larger question: To what extent should the church embrace popular culture in order to reach lost people?

  • wow lots of spam...anyway... I think we should be seeker sensitive. As far as the Harry Potter series, I think it is harmless fantasy. It is no worse than Santa Claus, or the Easter Bunny. Great entertainment. Nothing more.

  • I personally don't have a problem with it. But, if it is causing others to stumble, or if others see it as sinful, even though it is not; then it should not be used! 1 Cor 10:23-33

  • this is a lil bit of a stretch since I know the problem with hp is wizardry and witch craft. But I have seen Survivor tv series based VBS. That tv reality show has bad language, scantilly clad people, lying, back stabbing, etc. What is the difference? Both are entertainment. Do we really want our kids to come to church because of students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Yeah and I understand you said "outreach". I am just thinking outloud. Many will say well we will take out the good and use it to our advantage and leave the bad. Okay but....... what is wrong with a VBS that is just that-a VBS. I am neutral on this at the moment since I have not prayed about it. Just giving my 2 cents for what it is worth.
